Facing It at Gene's Books!

For some, waking up on April 11th, 2022, was just another manic Monday. For Tanis and I, it was the culmination of many manifestation pow-wows of years past during our writing-filled afternoons from a Manhattan Beach bungalow. April 11th was our first BOOK signing!

Gene's Books on the charming and exclusive Sanibel Island, off the coast of sunny southwest Florida, would serve as the perfect setting for the momentous occasion. This bookstore is adorned with two levels of floor-to-ceiling maple bookshelves filled to the brim with endless books, as carefully curated spiraled stacks of books decorated the second-floor railing that looked down onto the baby grand piano in the center of the bookstore. It could easily be the setting of a scene in a holiday Hallmark movie. I stood in awe of the inviting ambiance, bewitched by the pleasing aesthetic. We set up our books on the tables in front of the piano, pulled out the glittery milk pens (which we learned aren't the best for a book signing), and got to signing! Engaging with readers and friends that came to show us support, we nearly ran out of books!

Suddenly, it came over me; a wave of humility and gratitude laced with a touch of shock; we are friggin' AUTHORS! We not only wrote a book and published it, but some people are buying it and want us to sign it!

I was mind blown. Looking back on those long writing days, laughing, researching, and pouring our hearts and knowledge onto blank pages hoping that maybe one person would read it and gain something from it was all worth it.
